Maulana Malik Ibrahim State ISlamic University, Malang extracts its own philosophy from the treasures of islamic tradition, Indonesia culture, and novelty as the foundations of thought, attitude, and activity. In its position as the state islamic Higher Education under the coorination of the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, the University has positioned it self as a strategic force in bequeathing the richness of civilization and islamic thought. Al-Qur’an and the propehetic tradition are the fundations of knowledge that inspire the learning and research throught philosophical thought and scientific method. Islamic studies as the cultural heritage of the Muslim Comunity is placed as Important intellectual modalities in its effort to develop the scientific paradigm based on the integration principle of science and religion.

In the Indonesian context, the University is an integral part of the national education system which has a central position in educating people and preserving the richness of Indonesian culture.

Therefore, the University has consistently taken Pancasila and the UUD 1945 as it guidance in the implementation and development of educational programs. The University’s educational purposes are referred to the mandate of the Indonesian law and based on institutional vison combining higher education and traditions of pesantren (islamic boarding school). Pesantren itself, as an indigenous institution of education which is identical with the meanings of Islam and Indonesia, has been proven in producing many religious scholars wiht excellent characters of personality.

Similary, pesantren’s educational orientation in mastering Islamic teaching within Ahlusunnah wal Jama’ah school of thought has to be considered as a view point in spreading tolerance and peasceful Islam

Looking at the very dynamic of contemporary era, the University positions it self as an inspiring and visionary institution in initiating the center of excellence and islamic civilization throught Islamic education. the renewal of vision and excellence is conceptualized to be the model of “Ulul Albab Education” with the graduate characterized as ulama’-intellectual-professional (or the reverse) having four major strengths, i.e.deep spirituality, noble morality, broad knowledge, and mature professionalism. The University’s educational aims are ilustrated in the anatomical model of “the Tree of Science.
